Workbench finish tung oil

Many older oil cloth recipes use beeswax and linseed oil. I have coated several homemade canvas bags with a mixture of of the above and a little mineral spirits to keep the mixture soft. It is a lot of work to get it evenly coated but the end result is a bag that will be highly water resistant and wear like Iron.

Unfortunately my workbench will be in the garage which is unheated, so I don't think an oil finish will stand up to the changes in temperature and humidity. As always, I appreciate your imput. By the way - the bench is hard maple that has acclimated for about 18 months in the garage.

Sure, it would do a good job, but it is like using Jarrah for the deck and painting it (which I have also seen). Tung Oil can produce the most amazing finishes on fine furniture when applied with care and finesse.

It is a piece of nominal 1/2 inch waferboard left over from the construction of the house that was finished with some Homer Formby Tung Oil finish that was leftover from another project. Varnished waferboard is not pretty, but is has done fine for the last 25 years.

Likewise Tung Oil works well too and even a couple of coats of thinned poly, followed by a normal coat or two, though the latter will form more of a "film" on the surface. (I prefer matte finish, has it doesn't show marring and scratches as well.)

One might consider a sacrificial top during the build because over time you will scar up your top. Performing mechanical repair on a Woodworking Bench is a sure way to destroy your bench top.
